In the project The Sea Glass Factory, Gerontides pans between the idea of the romantic and sensitive character of a collector and his collection, and the transformation of a valuable object into a marketable product that meets our consumer needs.
In his installation at GARAGE, the artist proposes a design for the creation of a factory that will deal with the industrial and artificial production of sea glass (found on the beach or on the banks of rivers; “sea glass” or “beach glass”). This project studies the human need to imitate a natural phenomenon in order to mass produce its outcome, as per the contemporary market’s requirements. As the collector searches for the next unique sea glass, the factory turns this precious item into a marketable product.
